BEST KEPT SECRET ON THE WEST COAST OF VANCOUVER ISLAND

   Hello {tag:firstname},

Returns of Chinook stocks to Nootka Sound and Esperanza Inlet at its ALL time HIGH in recent history.

Yes it is TRUE according to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans we are going to have a Very Good return of Chinook and Coho this 2018 season. Why- Answer: The hot water blob in the mid-Pacific has dissipated. The Pacific Ocean in general has cooled and the upwelling that feed the ECO system are back to their positive normal. Add to that the support of nearly $400,000 over the past 12 yrs. of locally volunteer fund raising for Salmon Enhancement. These efforts support numerous stream and river rehabilitation projects, 6 Volunteer hatchery programs and the additional funding to the local federal hatchery to add 1.25 million more salmon fry to local waters. Totalling 3 million Chinook and ½ million Coho fry added to Nootka Sound and Esperanza Inlet each season. This is part of the reason why we will have the Healthiest and Best Fishing/Catching on Vancouver Island in Esperanza Inlet and Nootka Sound!

Come join the Fun, Fun, Fun! Make your reservations now while we still have room for Lodging, Moorage, ECO and Fishing Charters.

March Newsletter Joke- Thank you to Harmon Ronning

Here is why you need to pay attention when you go into a fish and fly shop.

A woman goes into the Bass Pro Shop to buy a rod and reel for her grandson's birthday. She doesn't know which one to get so she just grabs one and goes over to the counter. A Bass Pro Shop associate is standing there wearing dark shades.

She says, "Excuse me, sir. Can you tell me anything about this rod and reel?"

He says, "Ma'am, I'm completely blind. But if you'll drop it on the counter, I can tell you everything from the sound it makes." She doesn't believe him but drops it on the counter anyway.

He says, "That's a six-foot Shakespeare graphite rod with a Zebco 404 reel and 10-LB. test line. It's a good all around combination and it's on sale this week for only $20.00." She says, "It's amazing that you can tell all that just by the sound of it dropping on the counter. I'll take it!" As she opens her purse, her credit card drops on the floor. "Oh, that sounds like a MasterCard," he says.

She bends down to pick it up and accidentally passes gas. At first she is really embarrassed, but then realizes there is no way the blind clerk could tell it was she who tooted. Being blind, he wouldn't know that she was the only person around.

The man rings up the sale and says, "That'll be $34.50 please." The woman is totally confused by this and asks, "Didn't you tell me the rod and reel were on sale for $20.00? How did you get $34.50?" He replies, "The rod and reel is $20.00, but the Duck Call is $11.00 and the Bear Repellent is $3.50."

Esperanza Inlet & Nootka Sound Spring Fishing/Catching Report

The 1st week of May is when it ALL starts to happen. Yes Chinook in significate numbers come off Brooks Peninsula in huge schools headed south primarily to the Washington/Oregon Columbia River system. Yes 1 million + Salmon traveling down Vancouver Island on the beach. Lots of these fish enter the mouth of Esperanza Inlet and Beano Creek area near the mouth of Nootka Sound.

Yes the Fishing/Catching is Fast, Furious and Great! Filling your fish box!

These 16-28lb Chinook/Spring/Kings are plentiful and foraging.

Why are the Salmon here?

Answer: The end of the large annual Herring Spawn is in play as well as the beginning of the Sea Lance/Needle Fish Spawn that starts in early April. This combination allows for lots of Gorging/Feeding Chinook for your catching.

Other Good News – Halibut and Ling Cod move in close to shore to feed on these abundant schools of bait fish during this May & early June time frame.

How to Catch them in May and early June – Troll 5 to 10 ft. off the bottom with bait (anchovies or small herring) with a slow roll. Then “Hold On” – “Fish ON” you will be amazed at the volume and variety of Fish you will put in the Fish Box-Salmon, Ling Cod, Halibut and many other bottom fish.

If you prefer to use artificial baits stop by our Westview Marina’s Tackle Shop and we will show you what is catching / limiting locally. If You are looking for a Fun, Productive, Relaxed Fishing experience come to Westview Marina & Lodge the gateway to both Esperanza Inlet and Nootka Sound.
