Do you need any more GOOD reasons to come fishing with us this season?????

Chinook/Spring/Kings

Yes and it has already started. Hatchery marked Chinook from the USA are passing right by the mouth of Esperanza Inlet and Nootka Sound. Many are stopping to rest and feed. That is resulting in limits of Chinook (2 per day, per person) on a regular basis. Hot Spots in Esperanza are the inside Pins, Double Is., Rosa Hr. & the South & West side of Center Is.

In Nootka Hot Spots are Coopte Pt., Salter Pt., Canal Is., Hoiss Pt., Marvinas Bay & Boston Pt. Fish deep on the edges using 5-5.5inch Anchovies in a glow green header, Glow White Oil Slick & Glow Bud Hoochies, Rapala Flash Flies 1500,1502 & 1504, King Kandy candle fish scented lure Wonder Bread & Glow, Coho Killer Mother of Pearl & Irish Cream.

All of them catch fish and are available at the Westview Tackle Shop at competitive prices.

Coho/Silver

Local runs remain strong. We have two runs here. Spring / Early summer run 6 - 12 lb. Late Summer / Fall run 10 - 20+lb.

These fish are inside as well as outside on the Super Salmon Highway. The late season 20+lb fish are usually caught on the inside around Center Is. in Esperanza Inlet.

Yes a great FUN fish to catch. They are as acrobatic as a Steelhead and very tasty. Limits are 2 per day.

Halibut

The Biomass is on the upswing of its cycle. Also there was a huge herring spawn at the mouth of Esperanza in the Nuchatlitz & Peculiar Pt. areas and in Nootka on the west side of the Spanish Pilot Group Islands. What that means to YOU is that there are ALOT of 20-50 lb. Halibut inside. Fish at around 100ft of water around the for mentioned areas with a spreader bar & extra- large herring or salmon belly at slack tide or an hour before & after. Then HOLD ON!!!

FISH & CHIPS FOR YOU SOON!!!

Ling Cod

Cathy’s preferred fish to prepare and serve for dinner. These Cod are very plentiful throughout the area. Average size is 12-25 lb. With Lunkers in the 30 - 45lb range. Medium Herring or the new Lighthouse Lures work well. Find a contour that is at least 150 deep and fish up the slope. These territorial predators will surprise you with that first strike. Fish an incoming tide best.

Cathy’s favorite Ling Cod Recipe:

2 Pkts chicken bouillon powder        2 tbsp flour

2 garlic cloves minced                        2 tbsp margarine

2 carrots cut julienne strips               ¼ cup dry white wine

2 cups asparagus, cut 2’ lengths        1 tsp grated lemon peel & juice

 1 lb ling cod fillets

  1. In large deep skillet, dissolve bouillon powder in 2 cups boiling water. Add garlic, carrots, and asparagus and bring back to a boil.
  2. Reduce heat to medium low, add fish and cook for about 3 minutes until fish is done.
  3. Carefully remove fish and vegetables with a slotted spatula to a serving plate. Cover and keep warm.
  4. Mix together flour and margarine. Bring the bouillon to a boil and gradually whisk in the margarine mixture until sauce begins to thicken.
  5. Remove from heat and whisk in wine, lemon rind and juice. Season with pepper if desired. Pour sauce over fish & vegetables; serve with potatoes, brown rice, or a multigrain roll.
