YEAR END REPORT 2010As 2010 comes to a close Westview Marina and Lodge celebrates its 18th year of doing business in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Many people have asked how business was over this past year and our response has been: GREAT! Over the top! The best year ever! When asked what is driving our success the answers are as diverse as our business.
MARINA:We are first and foremost a year round full service marina providing 150 slips from 15 feet to 150 feet all with the power & potable water. In season the fuel dock opens at 5am. It has gas, diesel, a full line of fishing tackle & marine products, ice, bait, snacks & tobacco products. Available 24 hours a day 7 days a week are modern & clean showers, laundry mat and washrooms. Within the service package we have 2 full time mechanics. They repair and do maintenance on most models of motors and boats. They launch and retrieve boats, winterize and get boats ready for spring. We shrink wrap and store boats on site at the marina. Right now we have over 60 boats stored for the winter season. Other marina services include boat cleaning and waxing either before or after a day or week of fishing. One of our most popular services is the “Boat Valet”. Call us with a few days notice and we will have your boat clean, fuelled up, running and ready to go when you arrive. Step on your boat and go…no worries and no hassles. The same goes in reverse – step off your boat at the end of your trip and we will clean, fuel, service (if necessary), park your boat in your slip or pull it out for storage. You tell us what you would like done and your boat will be as requested upon your return.
CUSTOMERS:We have been very fortunate over the years to have a solid reoccurring customer base. Thank you! You are not only customers, you have become family and friends!
NEW CUSTOMERS:In 2005 West Jet started direct flights from Edmonton and Calgary Alberta to Comox on Vancouver Island. Customers then either rent a vehicle or have one available to them which they drove to the marina in approximately 3 hours. At first it was a trickle but now 5 years later it’s a full out flood of fishermen and families who have found us. Since West Jet started these very successful flights the number of other airlines and flights flying to Vancouver Island from many more cities on the mainland has increased dramatically. You can find the details of all of this on our website under “Getting Here” Fishermen and Fisherwomen will fish no matter what the economy is doing. Over the past couple of years, people who have in the past fished for Salmon, Halibut, and Ling Cod in Alaska and/or the Queen Charlotte Islands have found out that the fishing is excellent off the North West side of Vancouver Island for all of the same species of fish. In addition to the abundance of fish it is also a lot more inexpensive and faster to get to Tahsis. From Seattle, Spokane, greater Vancouver and western British Columbia you can drive and ferry it in one day. Plus you can bring your own boat. From most of Oregon, Northern California, Idaho, Montana, Eastern British Columbia, Alberta and western Saskatchewan – two days travel time by vehicle and ferry and the cost of the trip tends to be half of those to Alaska and the Queen Charlotte Island Lodges. In a nut shell, it’s cheaper, faster, and the volume of fish available to take home is as good as or better than in the areas north.
ACCOMMODATION:We now manage and book a very diverse group of accommodations. Everything from one bedroom suites on and off the water to six bedroom houses which can sleep up to twelve people. We can match your needs and budget for your holiday outing. All of our accommodations come with freezers for your fish, BBQ’s, TV’s and telephones. Some have high speed internet and some have hot tubs and saunas. Many of them have spacious decks with breathtaking views. While editing this newsletter two things kept jumping out. First, that we are located in beautiful area teaming with wildlife and sea life. Services are available as if you were in metropolitan Vancouver harbour on the mainland. This gives Westview Marina & Lodge a significant NICHE and our customers love it! Second of all our staff, professional mechanics, chef, prep cook, serving staff, dock hands, and housekeeping staff all understand the need to smile and keep the atmosphere at the marina light and lively.
