Late August FISHING REPORT

No more than a trace of rain for 9 weeks and some of the best Salmon & Halibut fishing we’ve seen in years. Then on August 23 (1st day of our 2 day Tahsis Salmon Enhancement Fishing Derby) a weather system moved in with 30km/20mph winds and nearly 15cm/6in of rain which came down in 12hrs. We really needed the rain for the forest and the fish, but, the timing was not so good. There were lots of fish entered in the derby but, very few were from offshore, which is where the larger fish usually come from this time of year. Today August 29th – things have settled down, the fishermen have found the fish again and the cleaning tables are full again with Chinook, Coho, Halibut & Lingcod. The best bet for fresh bright Salmon & Halibut- Nootka Sound-outside of Bajo Reef seaward of the red can and Esperanza Inlet-Outer Black Rock, The pinnacles & the “T” out on the Highway.

2013 Derby results.

Over 200 people attended the Saturday evening banquet held at the Tahsis Recreation Center. Lots of prizes where dispersed THANKS to the 107 business, individuals and companies who donated well over 200 prizes. YES everyone in attendance received at least one prize as well as a door prize and a GREAT Salmon/Chicken dinner. 37 individuals, organizations and companies participate in our VIP ENHANCEMENT BOARD by donating cash for local hatcheries. The VIP Board raised $10,727.  Thanks to Shawzy’s Charters for encouraging 8 of their charter groups to get involved on the VIP Board.

A very Special THANKS goes out to our Major Sponsors who contribute the Larger prizes for 1st place in each of the fish categories, the Derby Hats and to the silent & live auctions.
